Shalom Productions is pleased to announce the premiere performance of the dynamic one-woman-show Call Me Madam; the Making of an American Millionaire. How did a young girl born a plantation in 1867, orphaned at age 8, violated as a teenager and a single mother by age 19 become America’s first African American self-made millionaire? How did this washerwoman end up making more money than most men of her day and living in a mansion, only blocks away from the Rockefellers? It took perseverance, determination and a fearless tenacity that not everyone can possess. In this stage production written and performed by Kami Shalom, myths will be dispelled about this American icon and the truth and inspiration will prevail.

After visiting the Walker Theater Museum and Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis, Indiana, Shalom was inspired to complete this stage production and tell the real life story of a woman who defied the odds of racism, homelessness and poverty and left a legacy of greatness that can encourage us all to use what’s in our hands to live the life you always dreamed about. In this one-woman-show, Kami Shalom portrays more than 20 characters with clarity, humor and passion, bringing post Civil War America to life for a new generation. From a precocious little girl, to a plantation mistress and a smooth talking, street wise businessman; Shalom will take audiences on a fast paced journey; experiencing the people and places that shaped the life of an unforgettable woman.

Call Me Madam; The Making of an American Millionaire is directed by noted performing artist Candace Jennings and tells the story of Madam CJ Walker (born Sarah Breedlove) and her vision to create a beauty product empire that transported her from the washtub to wealth. This original stage production is a treat for the senses including original songs, choreography and larger than life graphic imagery.
